Why did the chicken cross the road?

This riddle first appeared in 1847 edition of a New York City magazine - The Knickerbocker.

The obvious answer is "to get to the other side of the road."

Isaac Newton said  "Chickens at rest tend to stay at rest. Chickens in motion tend to cross roads."

Do you have any other answers?
